Having a frustrating day
I really need to get caught up on housework today. Absolutely. But I'm finding my back is really bothering me today. Lower back is getting so tight I'm finding that about every 1/2 hour I need to sit down and get it to relax. It's been nagging at me for about a month, must have lifted something wrong a while ago. Or maybe it was struggling with the pretty stupid calves we've been having lately. Thankfully the newest 4 aren't stupid.
Do any of you go to a chiropractor. I'm really considering it if it doesn't get a lot better soon. But I have memories of my mom becoming almost totally crippled for a while when she went to one when I was a child and I don't have the time to get worse before it gets better.

Re: Having a frustrating day
yes! But ask around to your friends or relatives about who to go to...I do not like chiros that have you coming back again and again. A good one will say, "See how you feel and if you need to come back just give us a call". A good chiro should be able to fix you in one or two treatments. They can do wonders if your out of place and even give you ideas of excersises you can to at home to strengthen the muscles you need to .

Re: Having a frustrating day
Chiros are great for neck/back problems. Depending on how much your vertebrae are out of place, you may only need to go once or many times. I know when I had whiplash from a car accident, chiro helped more than pain pills, but it took many treatments (over 3 months). There are also many styles of chiropractic. What will work for one person may not work for the next. Word of mouth and if there isn't a measureable difference, feel free to check out a chiro with a different style.

Have you put ice on your back for 20 minutes and then alternate with heat for 10 minutes? Do you have back spasms, muscle pain, leg numbness, or swelling of the discs? Each will respond differently to chiropractic care..

Re: Having a frustrating day
I know that many people have confidence in chiropractors, but I do not. I think they are a temporary fix, because you feel pretty good while there, but nothing has been done to keep the bones in place because the tendons and muscles have not been strengthened to hold the bones in their proper place.
If you can find an Osteopath that does manipulations you would be further ahead in the long run. It would be a permanent fix if it is possible. They can give a series of shots that relax the muscles and tendons for weeks at a time, which allows the bones then to be in their proper position and because the muscles no longer hurt, they can stretch out instead of being tense and not allowing proper walking or standing. I would walk with my right foot splayed to the right as a way to alleviate the pain. After my series of shots, the foot came right back to center and from there I was able to strengthen the muscles in their proper position because the pain was not there. By the time the shots wore off, I was on my way back to proper position and healing. Getting a few weeks of Physical Therapy also is helpful if your insurance will pay for it.
I have also been advised to only use ice, that heat does not help with reducing swelling and that is usually what is causing a lot of the pain. Heat feels so much better while you do it, but the ice will help the most. I use a bag of frozen peas, they conform to any part of the body best and you just refreeze them.

Re: Having a frustrating day
Alleve is my best source. You are only suppose to take 2 a day, but my pharmist said I could take 2 every 4 hours for 3 days if needed. I did this for only 1 day and my back felt so much better. He made sure and tell me only do this about 3 times a year, because it will kill your liver. My daughter go to a chiro, and loves it but I am just to scared to try them. Good luck with what ever you decide because back pain is no fun.

Re: Having a frustrating day
All good tips. I go to a chiro because there's no osteopath in our area. I did have to have shots in my back for arthritis but they were from a specialist.
Do the heat/ice 10 min each. When I'm really bad I get a unltrasound treatment also. A good soak in the tub also helps relax those muscles to sleep. Sometimes I go to a massage therapist for extra relief.
One more thing is that the chiropractor told me not to sit in a recliner. Feels pretty good for awhile but it puts all the weight/pressure on that lower back area. You're better off laying flat on the couch or bed when you rest and put a pillow under your knees for support; between your knees if you lay on your side.

Re: Having a frustrating day
I strongly advise you to visit a chiropractor. The sooner you see a specialist, the faster you will be able to recover. In addition, your back pain can progress. Once I had similar back pain that a chiropractor from this clinic diamondchiroomaha.com helped me get rid of. He literally helped me get back to my normallife. Therefore, I advise you to see a doctor as soon as possible. You may only have to go for a couple of sessions.
