Is our group falling apart or just busy?

I have noticed that since Christmas (but mainly since we moved"over here" to the new format) our group has posted less and less....at least that is how it seems.  I am guessing that the winter weather has played a big role in the decline but I also wonder about the "life span" of a group such as this.

I am thinking we have been around for about 5 years?  Does that sound about right?  We seem to have a large membership but it seems that the regular posters are not posting as much and we are getting fewer new posters joining us in an activly posting.

Does this mean that the group has outlived its purpose?  Are we losing interest in the group or the members?  Is there just nothing new to say?

Or are we all just fighting bad weather, frozen pipes, livestock winter issues and busy schedules?  Maybe some folks are doing some winter escaping to warmer climates and off line temporarily?

All of this seems to just be the feeling that I have.  I wonder how long a group like this can stay active with involved members?

Anyone else been noticing this or is it just me?

Re: Is our group falling apart or just busy?

Spoiler

This week in particular, it has seemed very slow.  I do agree that some people have quit since the format changed...and it is frustrating to have to log in every time  for a week, then having to log in two or three times sometimes, you just get worn out trying.  Also, I guess a lot of people use the FB group page, which I never bothered to get onto for some reason.  I am sure that has to be more user-friendly.

Personally, I have been swamped with school and a bit with taxes, then got so sick, about all I could do for days on end was check in here.  Not much to tell when you are just feeling that funky.

Haven't moved around much until today, for the past ten, other than to get carried to the doctor/for x-rays, etc., and trying to make a class here and there with tests scheduled back-to-back.  You do NOT want to make an instructor create a makeup test at our school.  I have to miss a lab practical tomorrow for a specialist consult, but she has two more sessions on Thursday, so was fine with me delaying my test for one day.  There are no makeups for lab practicals.

The good news is, taxes will be done in a few days, since I finally feel a bit better and can see that most of the 1099s have finally arrived.  The bad news is:  I am not continuing with nursing school, since my own illness apparently stems from clinicals at the hospital week before last.

Second time I have gotten bronchitis/URI right after a hospital duty stint...last one made me feel crappy for almost six weeks....so my physician and Mike both are saying to forget the program for now.  I gained a lot of knowledge and skills I wanted in what I've been able to complete so far, and that was my goal.  Lots of family issues and situations need my attention now anyway.

I am hoping the specialist I see tomorrow can lend some insight as to how to avoid this sickness in the future.  My family doctor was making noises about either asthma or emphysema; but, so far, we can see from x-rays it is not emphysema.  I am worried that it is asthma, though.

So, give me ten days, and the CPA will be on the tax work instead of me, I will be doing only one class's studying (I am keeping active in my A&P course, two meetings a week/one lab EOW), and I hope the boys will be back here, getting some of my task cards off of the project board again.

While in town tomorrow, I have to pick out shingles for the store, decking for the pool,  and Mike has handed me a long list of plumbing repair parts for the farm.  I ran one list at Hog Slat for him when I went to pick up my x-rays for the appointment tomorrow from the local hospital today. Something tells me is is happy to have his "go-fer" back...oh, and this has been the worst winter of weather I've seen since 1989.

So, yes, i think everyone is swamped with snow, tax work, family matters, and such right now.  You were gone for a while, and I know twice in the past three days, I've wanted to start a thread, but just did not feel up to it.  I do not think our group is kaput...I think we are just pooped.

Re: Is our group falling apart or just busy?

I said to myself last night we are getting to a little slow around here.    But,   maybe we just don't have anything to talk about right now.     My MIL, bless her,  can not stand silence and will talk just for the sake of talking.   Never mind she said the same thing 5 minutes ago.    So I guess I prefer silence to mindless chatter sometime.

Kay,   so sorry to hear that your new career choice is making you sick.   You would think after being around pigs forever that your system could handle anything.    Last thing you need is this to turn into pneumonia.

I got desperate for fresh air in this house yesterday and opened a window for awhile.    And it was only Zero when I did it.  DH agreed to it.  We just threw a couple extra logs on the fire.    Seemed to help my sinuses a little.

Oh by the way.... we fired him.

Re: Is our group falling apart or just busy?

Sorry that I haven't posted much here either. Between the route, hog chores, and numerous meetings that go on this season, it has been difficult. Am planning to go to the Women in Ag this year, a welcome vacation, even though it is still considered work. At least I don't have to get bundled up to do it. Smiley Happy

I agree that the format makes it frustrating to post and get involved. Don't know about the facebook group that much. Hope that this forum gets busier. Thanks for all of your involvement.

Re: Is our group falling apart or just busy?

I've noticed the same thing; really slow & I do miss a lot of the "old posters".  I checked in here several times today & couldn't believe there was nothing new.  I don't know if it's my server, my computer or this site but it takes much longer to bring all the post options up & I don't always have the time to wait so just don't do it.

It was soooo much easier to respond on the old site.

Personally, I'm over my head in taxes.  Appointment is Fri. & I'm a long way from being pulled together.  Plus I had extra chores this morning as DH had a cat scan on his kidney & was gone from the farm.  On top of that I'm still dealing with the radiation center for my FIL.  The person in charge of planning the radiation (the marking was done 1/31) has been out sick & it seems to be a one horse outfit.  I wanted him to go to Peoria but he didn't want to travel the extra 15 min. so here we sit, waiting, while the tumor grows.  They are supposed to send it to someone else to do the planning if the person in charge is sick yet tomorrow.

Suey, glad you fired him.  There must be someone looking for work better than him!

Kay, I'm sorry you've been so sick.  I've noticed since you started the program you've had a lot of health issues.  There must also be a lot of stress for you trying to do so much.  I actually felt relief when I read your post although I know you must be disappointed.  It just sounded like your life had become so regimented & full I really don't know how you did it.

I'm going to call it a day.  Hopefully my mind will return tomorrow.

Re: Is our group falling apart or just busy?

Its cold here -10 or more the last couple of days.  I don't know why I haven't post much..in the last 2 months?  But have been reading most every day.

We have one heifer that is due to calf any day and the poor thing has had a big tight udder for over a week, it hurts me just to look at the poor thing...I guess she is waiting for this warmer weather we are to have this weekend Smiley Surprised)

Snow is piled up every where!  I did finally get smaart this year and put a snow fence out in the field north of our place, and boy is there a heck of alot of snow that thing held back..  Plan on getting some mor fence for next year now.

time to kid the kids up and gong.

Re: Is our group falling apart or just busy?

Soilbabe, I too have been wondering about the lack of posts here. I usually check the site more than once a day. I thought the gals would have more time during the winter to be at this site. I too just don't want to do FB. Most things do have a end time but I hope this goes on a long time. I wasn't here five years ago but wish I had found it earlier.

Maybe we need a hot new topic like the Pres wanting to put billions into a super fast train system when Amtrak continues to loose money on every passenger? I think it would have worked many years ago just like the French train but it is too late now. People like to fly. Near here farmers had taken out the train tracks that were long abandoned and were farming to the highway again. Now just a few years later a new train track is been put in to haul coal to a super power station. At a huge cost of course. I do like Amtrak.

Kay, I hate to hear you have to give up your dream. Maybe you will find a reason for the illness and you can continue at some point. You have worked so hard for this.

I am seeing the accountant tomorrow and then taxes will be out of the way for me.

Re: Is our group falling apart or just busy?

I've just been plain busy it seems right now.  Of course it seems like my job never slows down anymore.  I use to see a bit of a lull in the winter months after prepay and what not but now it's constant.

I believe this group has been around for quite some time.  I know it's been longer 5 years because I signed up when I was working back home in Southern MN and that was at least 8 years ago...Todd and I will be married 10 years in March and I want to say I was signed up around that time.

Re: Is our group falling apart or just busy?

I am glad that others noticed and that it wasn't just my imagination.  I guess all of the reasons you all gave combine to make for a slow month of stimulating discussion.  Hopefully, when the weather breaks and we have something interesting going on we will be our usual "talkative" selves.

I think I miss the exchange so much because I am in the middle, all by myself, at work so conversation of a more personal nature is not possible.  I work for an 11 member board and I get along well  with all of them and  we are friendly, not friends.  Occasionally Ed and I will socialize with one of my board members but I still would never share my personal life with them.  Then I have a staff of 15 and more than 100 student/participants.  Again, I am friendly with all of them but it is not appropriate to have a personal friendship with any of them.

I have my dear friends that know me inside and out but getting together with them is more of a planned occasion that takes place on weekends or on special occasions.  Of course we FB and talk on the phone and do lunch occasionally but.....

I like this group because at night when I get home I enjoy our conversations as if sitting over coffee with a bunch of gals sharing the events of the day.

In all honesty, I dont have all that much going on to write about right now.  I enjoy reading what you all write.  Your lives seem so much more interesting than mine.  My kids are grown up and the grands are getting busier.  My extended family lives a day's drive away and I don't have time for a lot of activities outside of my work day.  So I always looked forward to hearing about what you all were doing.

Anyway, I hope we are not falling apart.  I would miss this group.

Now that I have said all that......Kay, I am so sorry that you are leaving your nursing studies.  I know this was a challenge that you embraced and a goal that you set for yourself.  I am sure you have explored every option and I am glad you are putting your health at first priority.  It must have been a difficult decision.  Maybe someday when they get your health issues under control you can return.

Re: Is our group falling apart or just busy?

As for me it is busy!!. My new teaching position is very challenging and takes a lot of time and energy. I find that it takes a little longer to learn the new skills to be a real effective middle school special ed teacher. It is a small school and the classroom is multiaged and crosscatagorical. I know I was a real effective FACS teacher. The change is wearing me out. I know I will be better next year. The LD kids with the overriding EBD issues are a real handle. The 17 year old son keeps us busy also. He is active in 4-H, FFA, Choir, Band, forensics, Junior Holsteins, class officer and student representive on the school/community collorative committee and has his chores to do also. Keeps me busy just trying to keep his schedule straight. We are getting old and sometimes just want to sit and try to keep warm -13 here this morning, -12 yesterday, and predicted to -10 tonight. But the forecast is warming tomorrow with the 30s by Saturday.
