Losing our internet

We recieved a letter in the mail last week that as of Dec. 1 we will no longer be able to recieve our wireless internet at our house.  This puts a real crimp on us as we can not get service from the other provider due to no clear line of site unless we take down some trees.  Apparently Todd is very attached to said trees because he refuses to take them down.  I've been reading the reviews on Satelite and that doesn't look promising so that will leave us with a mobile hotspot type deal.  Kay how much does that eat up if we want to stream movies and what not?  I'm a little unhappy at the moment about this whole situation and feel that the company is leaving quite a few of us in a lurch by doing this.  So much for connecting rural America with technology.

Re: Losing our internet

We've had satellite & it really isn't that bad.  I guess it depends on the provider & how your area is but I wouldn't rule it out completely.

Re: Losing our internet

Linda who do you use?  I'm not reading any good reviews on HughesNet which would be our option at this time.

Re: Losing our internet

Unless they have really improved plans, forget satellite for streaming. Your daily downloads are pretty limited.

I would not try to stream with anything less than an unlimited plan...it eats up bytes like crazy. My add-on hotspot to the Verizon plan I have is $39.99 per month. I think I saw unlimited everything prepay phones there, last time I went in for a new SIM card. Seems like they were $60 a month...I need to check and switch, if so.

We are only at Jenna's house less than a fourth of the time, and use antenna TV for part of that...last time I looked at my usage,I was way over 13 gigs that month. And, the month wasn't nearly over.

Re: Losing our internet

We had pretty good luck with Wild Blue.  Right now I have wireless but not real impressed.  Guess I should have gotten the bigger Wi Fi router & bigger package so I could download faster.  Just don't do it that much as yet.  DS had it & talked me into his company and right after I switched from Wild Blue they added more for faster service.

Have antennae & that seems to have enough during the evenings but if you want to watch something during the day it's slim pickin's.  Of course, DH can watch his 3 old time TV  shows but after so long they drive me nuts & I run for a book.

Re: Losing our internet

Just for the heck of it, I toddled over to the Verizon website, to see what plans they offer now. My unlimited 4G LTE data package is unavailable now, so it is grandfathered.

They had some good outlines of what a Gigabyte of data plan will get you. It seems to translate to the following:

1gig equals 1000 emails, 3 hours of music, or 2 hours of movies.

They offered a 10 gigabyte plan at maximum, with additional gigabytes for $15 apiece. Not a very attractive rate to me. If you onky watched ine 2- hour movie a day, that would be roughly 60 hours a month, so 30 gigs. You do that math.

PS

Read the fine print on any plan...i am seeing " unlimited" ones that really only offer two gigs or so of data. Only the talk and text are unlimited.

There are a lot of possibilities when you search online for unlimited data plans. You are a smart cookie...search out one that works for you.
