Micro-chip for pets

Anyone know of any problems associated with having a micro chip implanted in a dog? I am considering having one put in Sable at her next vet visit.

Re: Micro-chip for pets

I ahev never heared any of our vets, or vet tech friends, mention any problems.  I do recall reading that there was a lack of standardization in the chips some years ago, so that a vet's reader might not be able to read a chip in a different format.  I hope that is worked out my now.

Our dogs don't leave the place, so we elect not to chip them.  If I had one with wanderlust, I would consider it, too.

Re: Micro-chip for pets

Twice in the past year Sable has gone looking for us. It has been in bad weather when we were gone a bit longer than our typical 10 hour days. She must get panicky or something. I just would feel better if she had one. Someone on another board mentioned that the chip makes it impossible to deny owning her if she gets into some kind of trouble.....hadnt thought of that one but it would be hard to deny her around here...everyone knows her. Pets do develop anxiety, especially if you detour from the regular routine.  They can tell time better than most humans, I think.

If she gets into trouble, that is what your homeowner's insurance is for...I would want to claim my dog, regardless.  Discuss the chipping with the vet, and also any management strategies for her wandering events.
