Here's a good article on the subject:

Seems that one thing that I have heard of being given is a nice hankie, that can be carreid by his bride on his wedding day.

Re: Need Help again
Savings bond along with the hankie type deal sounds like a good thing.....I always gave a silver dollar minted the year they were born along with the savings bond for my god children

Re: Need Help again
Had forgotten about silver dollar gifts. One old man in the community collected them - he was a general store owner - and always gave the Mama of a new baby one minted in the birth year.
There was another old man on crutches, who alwasy came to our home softball games in high school. He would sit on the tailgate of his red pickup truck, and if you hit a home run, he gave you a silver dollar.
Quaint tradition that has seen its day...glad you reminded me of it, Manureseller.

Re: Need Help again
What a nice gesture for a home run, today's kids would still like that. My granddad always passed out silver dollars to the grandchildren. One year we had to use our saved ones for baby shoes.
