Nervous me...

So my daughter is 100 miles away and has been having pains in her upper abdomen for now the fourth day.  went to the ER on Day 1.  They said UTI, gave her antibiotics and pain pills.  She has spend two days in bed and is now at work.  Calls me and said she doesn't feel good again..I told her she needed to talk to her manager. Manager wants her to stay.  I told her to take some tylenol, drink water and buck it up.  I guess when she passes out and they have to call an ambulance, I will go up.  He BF is out int he fields today.  I have been telling her to go to her regular doctor...which she doesn't think she has one ...she had a physical with one up there earlier this year.  Stubborn young lady.  I guess I don't know why after three days she is still in pain in the upper abdomen and feels crappy after being on antibiotics.  Nervous Nellie again on my part...

Re: Nervous me...

probably unrelated but I have to tell you the story about my oldest daughter.

She was at college.  Woke up with abdominal pain.  Thought at first maybe a case of food poisoning from fast food.  Didn't go away. Went to clinic at college, they said UTI put her on antibiotics.  Didn't get better.  Came home went to local doctor.  He barely touched her, said UTI and upped the antibiotic.  Still didn't get better.  So local doc upped strength of antibiotic again.   Still not better.  Could barely drive home from college this time.  Took her to ER.  They didn't know what was going on, thought it was female problems.  Took her by ambulance to larger hospital to have a scope done.  When they got in her didn't know what they were looking at so decided to open her up.  Turned out her appendix had burst and encased itself because of all the strong antibiotics.  Spent 10 days in hospital and an entire summer recovering.

So if it hurts when they press down on stomach, probably UTI.  If they stick with it and find out if it hurts more when they ease off pressure probably appendix.

Please don't let her just stick it out.  We are very lucky we have our daughter, she could have died very easily when her appendix burst.

Re: Nervous me...

Went through misdiagnosed appendix with oldest daughter when she was expecting .....nearly lost both of them....then went through pancreas problem with youngest that was misdiagnosed for three weeks during her senior year of college at final exam time. By the time she had surgery she nearly missed participation in her graduation ceremony.

Dont let it go. Either one is serious.

Re: Nervous me...

I went up there last night and took her back over to the E room.  They did an xray and said her bowel was backed up.  Needed to clean out.  I guess I don't understand how you can be that backed up to have such pains and not feel like you have to go.  Still had the UTI.  So we went to walmart and got fiber!  Hopefully this helps her.  They only did an xray and I know that xrays don't show alot of things.  This doctor spent alot more time with her than the one did the other night.  I encouraged her to eat breakfast (fiber cereal!), drink water and walk!  Poor girl misses her beef cattle at home so much!  But she is in dairy country and doesn't have a pasture to put her cows in.  May need to take one of my bucket calves to them.

Re: Nervous me...

I had a misdiagnosis at age 27, began w/ back pain that progessed to throwing up etc.  Two different docs put me on antibotics for Urinary infection/kidney infection, three weeks latera surgeon found a blockage w/two feet of dead tissue in my lower intestinal tract due to birth control....did an appendectomy as well.   Hang on Mom and keep an eye on her!!

Re: Nervous me...

UTIs are so common, in young women especially, I think a lot of docs take that diagnosis and look no further. This can mean that a good number of serious conditions get overlooked, at least for a while. We need to advocate for our health as women, and teach our daughters to do the same. Thank goodness you got treatment in time to save your life. There is one thing that may sound kind of gross to say, but some girls have an issue with having a BM away from home. It has been associated with a sort of OCD prble, I think. It is a psychological ssue, anyway. If she's been missing her normal elimination patterns while away from home, this could be q contributing factor. Improper hydration is an issue of a more physical origin. It could eba combination of the two....

Re: Nervous me...

I use FiberChoice even though I'm fairly "regular" but it does help.
