New Computer

New computer finallly!  We enrolled Sp in public school and he seems MUCH happier there than he did at the last one!  (What a blessing)  Have an iep meeting next week, they aren't too speedy on such matters. Both boys are showing and getting ready for FFA events.  Cale may get to announce at the hs football games, he is pretty excited about that.  My honey is working in New Mexico at present, will fly in tomorrow.  OUR GRASS IS GREEN!!

Re: New Computer

New Computers are a mixed blessing.  I've had this one for a year and there are still things I haven't tried.

Your DS  are growing up.    Wish the old guy at our HS  would give up his FB game announcing.  He is getting lots of things wrong now  and with the new consolidated school, (6 years now),  he is blowing even more names.   It would be a wonderful opportunity for a younger person.    Would look good on those scholarship  applications too.    Won't be long and we will hearing about college visits.  But,  from seeing your blog  I don't think he  has much choosing to do.

Glad you have green grass.   We are now 35 days without precipitation.

Re: New Computer

Our grass is crunchy!  except the new seeding which we have been diligently watering.  My DH said we could get a new computer.  He is tired of fighting our  DD's that is 6 years old.  We were so spoiled when DS was/is home because we used his.  Now that he is in college, he takes it back and forth from the apartment on weekends.  I asked about a iPad and DH said it would be too small. So i suppose this week or weekend, I get to go laptop shopping!  We do have a desktop that is collecting dust.  we like to sit in front of the TV or in our easy chairs and look at the computer.  LAZY!!! I know.

Re: New Computer

About that iep, be sure he carrys it to college with him...it is very important for us to know his needs.  We have a program called VITALS here, I do not know if his college of choice will have or not, but it is a blessing for some.

Re: New Computer

Just a week or so ago I learned that a student could have an iep at college, great for some kids.  I wish here in OK that we had basic daily function math for kids like S, he really is mind blown by the current offering.  (me too)!!

Re: New Computer

What kind of computer have you gals upgraded too?  Mine is driving me bonkers; it is so slow.  I'm going to take it in one more time to see if it can be cleaned up.  Might be the year to get a new one with the sale of the cows we will need deductions.

Re: New Computer

I got a HP with windows 7 desktop. Given that you probably won't be needing as much for business, maybe you should look at laptops as well. That way you can take it with you if DH gets a little owey. You won't be tied to the house or one place in the house. Good luck and have fun looking at all the different alternatives.

Re: New Computer

Whenever I decide it is time for new technology, I do what we were told to do with our very first computer. I sit down and list what I want to use it for...now, also where I want it to go. Try to think of things you would like to do, not just hat you already do.

I honestly think the office desktop we have now may be our last machine tied to one location. I keep a laptop at Jenna's, mostly for reading SD cards out of the game cameras. I rarely even plug it in. I do not like the way laptop batteries and computers get involved in fires, so treat mine like a stove...only on when we are present. That may be dumb, but I'll just be dumb, then.

I truly enjoy the iPad and Kindle Fire HD tablets. I have become accustomed to touch-screens, between these and DROID, and never liked the older Kindle keyboards. I use iPad or Kindle for surfing, checking email and FB, as well as shopping online. I mentioned to the librarian the other day that teaching Winn to manipulate a mouse seems pointless to me. He uses a touchscreen easily...it is very intuitive.

I would opt for a nice photo printer...lots of fun. Unless you already have WiFi, you will need a wireless router. Look at how easily and inexpensively you can install software and upgrades, too. A lot of that has changed tremendously in recent years.

Have fun!

Re: New Computer

I tried to get my wife to use a computer but she is a total Luddite.  Got her an iPad and she loves it.  Does facteme with daughters and grandson.  Does email on it.  Looks up shopping stuff.  Orders online.  Banks online.

It's certainly not a computer as we think of one that actually "does" stuff.  But, for some, it's enough.

I have four and am never totally happy with mine.  🙂

Re: New Computer

DS has one laptop which he/I use but has given us some trouble & I used a local guy for repair which was a mistake.

Not sure how/where to go to rectify the problems.  That said, we use that for "play" or casual use only.

It's known how I am a nerd coming to electronics, but what do you do about backup or storage on a laptop?  How can you do business checking, etc. on it?  At present ours isn't hooked up to our printer.  I really need to get someone in here to update everything if/when I get a new computer.  We have a new printer but not set up for the laptop.  DS#1 is pretty good at this stuff but we can't seem to get together.  Life is way too busy lately.  Even without the dairy, we will still have to do some bookkeeping on the computer; think I'd feel better with a regular computer.  Again, old dog here.
