Owning Stock

Do any of you own stock in companies?  Seems lots of people have made money in the stock market, but I wouldn't have any clue on what to buy. I realize alot of people lost money too in the last crash.

Re: Owning Stock

We have had some stock & sold most of it instead investing in bonds, etc.  None has done very well especially in the last year.  We really aren't very good at watching it - rely on our broker - but have done better investing with our insurance company in an account that gaurantees 7%.  Hard to find that nowdays.  Also have stock in our milk company which pays a dividend.

If you're savvy I think you can do pretty good.  Just not a talent we have here.

Re: Owning Stock

Yes, we own/and have owned stock, in both private and publicly-traded companies.  Of all the things I should have studied and haven't, investing well is probably at the top of the list.

I totally lack confidence in investing in equities.  Have made some money, and lost a bit, too.

A few months ago, other than our Roth IRAs, I did a custodial sweep, and essentially all but closed my brokerage accounts.  We hold most of what we have left, outside of the bank and land assets, in muni bonds, and one smaller side investment in some REITs.  That last one I did against my better judgment.  It was a diversification at the time.

A couple of months ago,  I decided that I wanted every square inch of everything we owned to be totally free and clear.  We were most of the way there, and some farms had never had liens on them; but, I wanted them all to be out of a bank's reach.

No one can just take what you have,  if you have paid for it.   The peace of mind of not owing anyone a payment for the first time in many years is worth the potential loss of earnings to me.  We could have cashed out years ago, and didnt'...I don't know why; but, it's done now.

Next step is to continue to spread the savings around in several banks, staying beneath the FDIC limits of insurance in each one.  I am also investing a bit as I go along in GS's 529 Plan, for his post-HS  education.

My stock in our family's privately-owned corporation is worth a bit, but I couldn't really sell it off.  That one is a sticky wicket...I'd rather not tackle it at present.  I earn a few grand each year from what's invested there in my portion.

I would say that land has been and will continue to be our best investment.  We are about 60% in growing timber, and that has historically been a decent position to take in our region.  We are set to keep moving forward in contract hog production, and that has also historically paid us very well...compared to the stock market, it is at least the devil I know.

Re: Owning Stock

We do own a few stocks.  Our most successful stock is our stock in the local ethanol plant.   We've earned back all our investment in dividends and patronage refunds.    In our retirement accounts  which are there for  "tax purposes"  only.   We basically have mutual funds.   Otherwise,  we've bought a few agricultural stocks  such as:   Monsanto - have lost money and low dividends.  we thought it would be a hedge against high seed prices.    John Deere.   kind of neutral in stock price  but the dividends with JD  have been excellent.   Last year I bought some stock in a USA  energy company.   With years like the past.   I don't look at the bottom figure till I have to for a financial statement or to balance an account for the tax accountant.

I had hoped when I didn't have pigs I'd have time to pay attention to retirement accounts.... But,  I was wrong.   Again.

Re: Owning Stock

I am glad the ethanol stock did well for you. I keep hearing stories of losses.

Re: Owning Stock

When the DOW hit 6500 back in 2009, I bought everything I could up to the amount that I felt I could afford to lose.  I am very glad I did.  The market has almost doubled in those three years.  I wish I had invested way more than I did.

I do all my own trading, through my ETrade account.  I watch it daily and feel like I do better than our broker did for us.

I was just talking with Ed about a particular stock that has reached its 52 week low right now.  I want to buy a significant amount of it.  Even though the market is high this particular stock is ripe for the picking.

I would never dream to give advice except for this...invest in what you know.....
