Table talk?

Threw a quick supper when we got to Jenna's yesterdat late. It wasn't dark enough for the ceiling light yet, but not ebpnough sunlight was making it in the kitchen windows, so I dragged out a couple of candles and holders.

Mike made a comment about a candlelight dinner. I told him I was trying to woo him. We had a nice talk about our plans for today, just small talk...but no pigs, hay bales, pickup trucks...just how we are enjoying the flowers, how many berries are ready to eat, totally non-work stuff.

It made me realze that most of our mealtimes are probably more like business meetings. This chore, that bill, what needs fixing next. I shudder to realize that we did this to our kids every day, all their lives until they were hrown.

I think maybe we ha forgotten a lot of how to just talk together. Not lomg ago, we got into our favorite restaurant on a very bust bight, and the waiter apologized for the wait for our meals. We had been having such a fun conversation, I hadn't even noticed.

Maybe this is what being away once in a while lets us do...put the farm aside and just have a life. Does your mealtime conversation always involve farming, or do you set it aside while you eat?

Re: Table talk?

Many years ago my DH began going to WalMart in the evenings with me to shop. (Now he has to go to WM alone since I almost always refuse to shop there) It was during these drives to town that we began to have these type of conversations. We have continued to talk in the car while driving whether is a Sunday trip or a real trip. It is so easy to just talk business when the chance arises.

Re: Table talk?

Our daily table talk is like so many of yours, daily chores & bills. Kind of sad but yet good I am capable of understanding. For many years he farmed livestock while we lived in town, renting buildings several miles away. I knew absolutely nothing about the farm or how many head, etc. Now I'm pretty in the know although I've been benched with my gimpy knee. When we are out alone, not often because DS is with a lot, I have a time filling the conversation. Couple old fogies but sometimes a little quiet is OK too.

Re: Table talk?

Seems that I recall some younger person making a comment to me once, or I read this as a story.  Younger couple out to dinner observing an older couple eating, mostly in silence.  The girl remarks to her boyfriend that she hopes she "never gets old and bored the way those people are."

I think about that sometimes, if we are having a mostly silent supper.  Then, I realize that we don't really have to say much, to understand each other anymore.

Caught myself laughing out loud at something on TV last night, and it sort of startled me...I haven't laughed much in over a year now.  If anything, the last few months have felt sadder.  I think it is all finally sinking in now.
