WIA Facebook

I guess it is time for me to quit visiting the WIA  Facebook page.  I had thought it would be lots of farm women throughout the US and other countries  talking about farming in their area.   Instead  it seems to be taken over by what I can only call professional "linksters".     Right now over half the posts are by these people  with links to organics,  no antibiotics,  no factory farms, and of course blaming GMO's and  Monsanto for all the bad things in the world.     I can't ignore these posts.   I've spent a good part of my life standing up for  modern Agriculture and farming  so I don't like to let such opinions  by  "experts"  (thank you Kay for the definition of an expert)  go unanswered.     The poster/linkster claims they aren't bias..... yeah right.....

If you want to go organic and can afford it go ahead.    If you want to raise all organic  and have the labor  go ahead.   But,   I repeat  I think Treflan was the greatest invention in the world.( Teflan was the first herbicide my dad ever used)    I spent many summers of my youth walking soybean fields with a hoe or bean hook.   I have no desire to do it again   and I am absolutely certain we will not find youth to walk bean fields to pull:  cockleburs,   waterhemp,  pigweeds,  button weeds, jimson weeks,  volunteer corn, smart weed,  and foxtail at minium wage  let alone below min. wage..... oh yeah.... the dept. of labor thinks we shouldn't hire them.

The one poster which I'm pretty sure is Indian or from Pakistan,  posted on the Ag Business forum  3 times one day right after registering.     Don't think they've been back after having their link  attacked.

So am I alone in my feelings?    Is WIA  facebook  not a place for US farmers?     Are we expected to be politically correct and not upset their organic applecart?    Lisa,   Can you tell us if they even are farmers,  daughters,  wives or even women?

Re: WIA Facebook

Suey, I am going to take this position on this one:

I saw your frustration with this person's constant linking to sites I would agree are anti-ag, at least in terms of modern American agriculture, for the majority of what the industry consists of here and now.  While that is our reality, I am well aware that our system is more of an exception than the rule, in a global context.

I think this person is stirring the pot.  Your responses to her (?...how do you know if this is even a WOMAN...we've had a few ringers here over the years....) have made proper and informative counterpoints.  I've tried to add a couple of pieces of info, and you've clarified what I started.

Let's be honest: not many people understand why a seed company won't allow seed saving of its product.  While you and I knew it was a legal condition of buying the seed in the first place, the uninitiated have no concept of the legal agreements, conditions, regulations,. etc., that American farmers have to deal with daily.  To them, it is just Big Seed Company beating up on the poor of the world.

While I commented that I do not really favor patenting biological material (Read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, to see why I guestion the practice), if it is legal and everyone agrees it is up front ( and it is), who is Monsanto cheating?

It has been, and still is, a big deal in international circles to have American intellectual property and inventions stolen by overseas interests.    I think many nations simply do not recognize our rights to own our own products.  This is a huge component in teh imbalance of trade.

All of that said, I deal with mis- and disinformation constantly, as a hog farmer in North Carolina.  One more innuendo-spewing naysayer doesn't rattle me all that much.  I just put up the truth against their  "what ifs", and let the chips fall where they may.

If Salma had anything but llinks to offer, wouldn't she have posted it by now? If you and I don't answer her, who will?

Re: WIA Facebook

I added you to the Women in Ag website where a few of us "here" are members.  If you don't want to be on there, you can take yourself back off.  There are only now 30 on that facebook page.

Re: WIA Facebook

My opinion for what it's worth (and I think it is)  Suey, and you other ladies (and guys) is to take WIA Facebook and hit it full on, be as controversial as you can (or want)  Tell the world your opinions ,   Many of your posts on there (facebook) are still "have a nice day stuff"   and I also don't  recon many people even know about Women in Ag, where as Face book is worldwide,

I have to say I think Salma makes SOME good points worthy of debate, So have many of you,  "Go get em Girls"

Re: WIA Facebook

It should just be Women in Ag...it has a red combine in the picture with I think a green tractor.  I added you, so it should show up for you.
