Welcome to my world
Yesterday when I got to the gym in town, my trainer came in all excited about a breaking news story on our county. Many of the newly-indicted sheriff's department members evidently train at the gym, so she knew most of them. I asked her to read me the story while we got going.
Turned out, 13 people were arrested on federal warrants, including drug and weapons charges. It was the culmination of a two- year FBI, state and local investigation. Half of the officers were at the local airport, waiting for a multi-kilo drug drop, the other half at a warehouse about 30 minutes away, getting ready to distribute it.
They have been charged with helping to transport heroin and cocaine along the East Coast, using these locations. One of those indicted was the son and namesake of our former sheriff, who himself resigned prematurely a couple of years ago, leaving a year of his last term unserved. People have always speculated that he was dirty, too. I doubt these Feds have finished with our area....
How would you feel if you found out late yesterday that a significant proportion of your local law enforcement agency was sitting in jail, waiting to be brought into court for this kind of crime this morning?
We feel at risk...thieves should have a field day. There was no real success at stopping the constant robberies of people's homes here, with a fully-staffed sheriff's office.
We feel ashamed, that this was going on and we were paying these people to work for organized crime at the same time. I know some lived above their means at our local pay grade...evidently, someone noticed.
We frankly aren't shocked or even surprised, though. That is what really worries us....

Re: Welcome to my world
How sad and troubling. A indication of the troubles in this once great country. So much greed from the top down to the county level. The next election will be critical. Is this the county with all the home robberies?

Re: Welcome to my world
My brother in Texas deals with that type of thing too in his county. I guess you can have your good cops and your cops and your really pricky cops!! I wonder if some of the robbers had something over on the cops so the cops didn't follow up on the robberies.

Re: Welcome to my world
So, how many cops do they still have? Are you concerned whether or not they are good cops?
Sounds like a very bad situation for your area. Are the State police going to help with calls.?

Re: Welcome to my world
I am not sure how big the department has become...we have been told in past calls for response that " there's just one deputy on today, and he's doing funeral duty". Can't be but so big, then.
Two were former deputies, five current deputies, one a dispatcher. Ranked as high as captain, also a sargent and a lieutenant. There were a number of both Va and NC correctional employees, and a town cop from about an hour away. Total of fifteen in this bust. Really bad.
Yes, this is the county where robberies have been truly an epidemic. Guess these guys were at least too busy running drugs, if not actively turning their heads to that, too. It does make you wonder.
I have posted to a friend in the department, as well as the neighboring county's sheriff ( whose department generated the investigation, starting in 2013), that we need to know who will be filling in PDQ.

Re: Welcome to my world
Yes, especially when you consider that one of the former deputies is son of the former sgpheriff, who resigned with a year left in his last term. This activity is alleged to have begun on his tenure. I am still thinking there is at least one more shoe to drop here....
