Where is everybody?

I last posted in spring, and I got busy this summer so didn't check in much.   In fact my login expired.  There used to be more activity here, what happened?

Re: Where is everybody?

My guess is twofold: harvest and Facebook.

How's harvest going for you?

Re: Where is everybody?

Harvest and Facebook are my reasons.     In Sept.  we moved into the  Big House across  the yard.   It still does not feel like home.   Thank goodness we still have our same bed.   The bedroom is even painted and carpeted  the same as our old one.   Still afraid to put nail holes in the walls.   Until harvest and fall activites are done... there will be no new work done on the house.   I bought new hardware/pulls for new bathroom cabinets 3 weeks ago.  Still opening with fingernails and fingertips.

Harvest is going pretty good.   We had too much nongmo corn.  We did not spray it and it got:  cornborers,  and leaf diseases.   Our nongmo is getting out yielded by gmo  25 to 50 bushels.    We have started soybeans.  Biggest hiccup is the combine.  We have some computer board that keeps burning out.  We've gone through 2.   $1,200 each.   The JD  Tech currently has an e-mail into the "big engineers at  John Deere".   To start the combine  we have to gerryrig it.   It has no lights.. so no night harvesting,  and some settings can not be changed.   but,  it will combine.

Getting new pigs Friday.   Will move pigs from nursery to Finishing building Monday.  Power wash nursery on Tuesday and Wed.  I simply can not handle doing the whole nursery in one day.   Tendenitis will have me almost in tears if I try.   My HS powerwasher plays football.   He did the finishing building Saturday.

And my family bed and breakfast will be busy  on weekends.   Have company right now...(free combine operator)  from Kansas.  Next weekend  expect:  Son and fiance,   Sister in law and her DH on Sat. Niece and DH on Sunday.

MIL had her yearly combine ride today.   She is almost 88  was more apprehensive about the climb this year than last year.

Re: Where is everybody?

Still calving in VA...slowly but surely.  After twelve days of rain, lagoons are being lowered in NC.  One reel lost a hose splice today, so the repairman owes us a re-do ASAP.

Securing repairs to roof/ ceiling and one house in Virginia, storm door on the other...they needed a refrigerator right in the middle of the worst of the rain, so we swapped ours out and put the new one in our house.  Need my fixit guy to run a line to the icemaker.  Finally getting modern there! New storm windows for a couple of places up there arrived at Lowe's today.

Just finished the new genset installation Thursday before Joaqchin was due that weekend.  Have damaged landscaping to repair where they trenched and set regulators. Heating contractor says he is coming this week, to trench in exchanger line to my workshop.  Water line goes to greenhouse the same day.

Mike cut 25 acres of hay in Va yesterday, and git hit with the kids wanting their last 25 cut here today...so, we are right back to fifty acres of hay, 75 miles apart.

Meanwhile, I run grandson to preschool and kids' gym two afternoons every week, Kindermusik on Mondays is being taken over by his parents.  I keep him three days a week, and then some most weeks.  Housebreaking new puppy, cleaning up yards after storms.

Re: Where is everybody?

Suey I don't know how you handle it all especially with all the company.

We just got back from four days away in IL. Saturday was a great family reunion near Chicago. Sunday we drove around the Spoon River festival.  I cannot walk that much so I watched from the car. Crowded but it appeared that sales were way down as they were here for the tractor show. I believe the 'Hoaders' show and others plus the trendy magazines showing no clutter have had an effect on the trends for yard sales, flea markets and antique stores. Tons of 'stuff'' was still on the yard sale tables late Sunday afternoon. Beginning of new trends?

Kids here when got home with ice cream cake and pizza for my birthday. Today we are celebrating our long marriage. (not telling how many)

Re: Where is everybody?

There is an amazing amount of traffic on the Women in Agriculture group on Facebook.  I think a lot of folks moved over there for various reasons.  My guess is the big rreason is they were already on Fb.  Another is frustration with the management of these forums. Some of the pages are ghost towns.

If you have not visited the Women in Agriculture Facebook group here is the message pinned to the top:

Welcome! Women in Ag is a project of Successful Farming magazine and Agriculture.com. We invite you to join this group and talk about all things agriculture with others who understand farm life. Before participating, please read the group guidelines, posted under the "files" tab at the top of this page, or in the comments below. Re: Where is everybody?

We tried to get some friends up here for a girls' day checking out antiques malls, guys doing their thing, the third weekend of September.  They were slready going to Charlotte that weekend.  Since then we had hay, the generator installarion, which took time over several days, threatened hurricane, hay again.

I am trying to get them up the last weekend of October, because Winn is going to be away camping with his parents, and Halloween alone is depressing now....

I don't  think these other people comprehend the work we have to do, and when it has to be done, social events have to wait.  Once they retired, their only obligation is the wife works private duty nursing, to get out of the house.

Also, training this pup is finally starting to click in her brain, but who needs houseguests with the need to walk her every time you turn around, and the occasional boo-boo?!?

Re: Where is everybody?

My excuse is harvest and kid activities.. but mostly harvest.    My days.... Leave the house at 7 am to drop dd off for school bus and then do chores, unload trucks that were filled after elevator closed the night before, by the time I get done with that the combines rolling again so more trucks to go to town, somewhere in the day i find time to go fix lunch, perhaps run after parts, quick trip to grocery for milk, more chores, treat a sick feedlot calf occasionally, then more trucks, help change fields or farms, check cows, and try to get to a cross country meet in time to see my kid run or take dd to a meeting.   and then the next day it starts all over.

Re: Where is everybody?

I was here & wrote a text last week and got interrupted so it timed out.  Story of my life-LOL!

Been really busy with doctor appointments with Brian and my mom along with some check ups for Ronnie.  Mom has to have 2 teeth pulled the end of the month so checking with the dentist, oral surgeon, and regular doctor has made for many trips plus the regular weekly hair & grocery trips.   Doesn't seem we have much time to do anything else.

We have 2 grands in different sports so that keeps us really busy too.  Never got to many games while milking so trying to catch as much as we can.  They grow up so fast!

Brian doing well but it is a real battle keeping two different doctors appointments & chemo pills on track.  Right now we have an appointment in Peoria & Chicago the same day.  They are supposed to be getting it straightened out but I'm still waiting for a call for 2 weeks now.  Grrr.  Plus the $3000 bill came back rejected again for a special MRI.  I feel they should have OKd with insurance first.

Corn is all out.  Our little 80 A. doesn't take our neighbor long.  Qalifies for a garden plot nowadays!  LOL  Yields were good although the corn went down a lot from wind.  Trying to get things done for winter now.  Hope this site gets a little busier.  I'm off for a walk in this beautiful weather!!

Re: Where is everybody?

It is a wonderful day here too so beautiful. We took DGS to see area where my dad's family lived in the beautiful hill country in S IN.  Every one is so busy with so many different things. But I will certainly miss this site if it goes down.
