business phone etiiquette
A claims adjuster just called the house phone. I had to make him repeat himself 3 times before I could understand who he was. Could understand the insurance company name and then it was just gobblety gook. 3 times before he slowed down enough to be understandable.
You would think if some one is going to be using the phone in their business they would be sure to speak in a manner that can be understood. I can not even count the number of messages left on the machine that have been totally indecipherable.
Then this guy today when I told him he'd have to speak to my husband and gave him the cell number told me he had called it 3 times in a row and it said it was disconnected. I simply told him, you dialed wrong then. HUbby just came to the house and the numbskull must have slowed down and dialed correctly cause hubby did talk to him.
OMG I sound like an old coot don't I.
But really if you are going to use the phone for communication, you should do it well.
I have to get after one of my daughters because you can't understand half of what she says most of the time.

A man in business who answers the phone like that deserves your advice on improving his tone if he is good at what he is doing.

Re: business phone etiiquette
I always have to tell my kids to either speak up or slow down. I even had my step-MIL call the other day and had to tell her to slow down and repeat what she said. she had so much information to give me, my mind just doesn't process that fast anymore. I also think I need to go get a hearing test....just can't hear my kids talk!

Re: business phone etiiquette
insurance guy was a winner. Apparently he did finally slow down and dial my husband's number correctly cause hubby talked to him. Said the guy asked him a question, he gave the answer and the guy kept babbling on then asked the sam question gain. Guy realy needs to learn to work on the phone better.

This is big pet peeve of mine too. It's especially bad if they also have a heavy accent (which is more and more common in my part of the world).

Re: business phone etiiquette
I gave the contract liason an earful about telephone etiquette after that, as in...it is " Hello, this is Joe Smith from the feed mill..." Amazing how much they improved after that! No more " Is Mike Winn there?"
This is a pet peeve of mine, too. My hearing is still a wteck, with all this hay dust and allergies. I will ask someone to reoeat, clarify, eyc., until I get it.
