dollar general

I bought sugar at dg this afternoon, came home and mixed up choc chip cookies for Cale to take on an FFA thing in the am....since I am such a good cook I am sure that the mess I've made could not be blamed on anything but dg's sugar.....it was quite coarse compared to other brandsa, wish I could extract the butter, choc chips and pecans!!!!

Re: dollar general

Disappointing, isn't it?  I gave up on bargain and store barnds of most basics eons ago.  I think cheap sugar is beet sugar, where better brands are cane sugar.  I think I brought this up some months ago, and most of us are stuck on our brand...for us, it's Domino or Dixie Crystals.

As much as the rest of those ingredients cost, it is a shame to bring them down with gritty sweetener.  Better luck next time.

Re: dollar general

after thinking over my adventure....I think the use of my very lovely KA mixer was a mistake, just cant beat the stuffing out of real butter and expect them to turn out like normal, so I can't blame dg, even though, I don't like the coarseness of the sugar.  I did look and check the "where its made" and found it to be made here, so I went ahead in buying it.  While I'm on the where its made subject, I bought great value brand apple juice concentrate.....usually I refuse to buy wm brand....but I didn't even look and when we made it the other morning, I noticed...MADE IN CHINA and GERMANY....

Re: dollar general

As a man, I like DG.  The reason being, much of my shopping involves grabbing a gallon of mild for the kids, and occasionally a box of cereal, or some juice.  DG has the milk, juice and cereal right near the checkout, instead of clear in the back of the store.  The fact that it is right across the street from the parts store doesn't hurt, either.

Re: dollar general

You really think it was the KA?  I use mine every time I make cookies or anything else.  Only use my hand mixer occasionally.  Was your butter too warm-I did have a flop at Christmas when I tried to soften in the microwave.

I seem to be taking more & more time at the grocery store & everywhere else for that fact, trying to read the labels.  There are so many brands that are made other than the U.S. or filter in some ingredients.  I think juices are one of the worst culprits.  One that got me the other day was a cranberry juice that was 100% juice; just not 100% cranberry juice!  And those labels aren't the easiest to read - better have magnifiers on!

Re: dollar general

My DH surprised me the a KA mixer a few years ago and I have found it to be too powerful and I seldom use it. I did get it out for some cooking-baking at Christmas time. The first thing I tried was mashed potatoes and they were almost ruined.

I have never bought sugar at DG but I do buy off brands sometimes and have found the oposite, too much powder in the sugar. I hope it is powder sugar but more likely corn starch or something similar.

Re: dollar general

Pretty sure it was me that was the problem!!!  But not to worry, Cale left off bright and early @4:45 am with a tub full of brownies...that I didn't mess up!!  He should be giving reasons we "speak"!  Have a great day!

Re: dollar general

The pschology of marketing food in fascinating.  Regular grocery stores are laid out in such a manner as to force you to walk past a lot of high-yield convenience foods, which are more profitable for the store...one your way to the few things you probably actually NEED.  A store like Dollar General is probably selling them mostly just to get people into their store, so having them conveniently displayed is a plus to them.

I read a really good book on food merchandising a long time ago - I think it was called The Supermarket Handbook.  It explained that, in general, fresher and more basic items are sold around the periphery of the store.  Dairy, bakery, produce, meats, etc., are usually on the outside loop, with snack foods, mixes, etc. ,on the inside aisles.

The strategy for improving nutrition at lesser cost was thus to avoid the inner display areas fo the store.  There is also a lot fo jockeying for eye level position on shelving - vendors actually pay the store for this position - so scan higher and lower, to find better values.

Re: dollar general

The grocery store in town was recently sold and the new chain did a major remodel.  Interestingly they put a cooler end cap just behind the checkouts in which they put milk.  Since I don't buy milk I haven't really paid that much attention to it but I know I saw milk and then got the breakfast feel from the other stuff they had in it.  Now if they'd put the flavored coffee creamer my boys like that would save me a lot of steps.  Seems like I make more runs for that stuff than anything else on the farm.

One of the DG's in town shares the parking lot with that grocery chain store.  I buy, dog food, laundry soap, and cleaning supplies for the parlor there.  The grocery store does not seem to have the brand of laundry soap I like in he but the DG does.  Also I buy the largest dish soap for scrubbing the parlor walls for approx 50 cents a bottle less plus the chain doesn't always have the really big bottles.  I also will pick up the really cheap bath towels to use on new born calves.  Had to do something to keep them from taking my bath sheets out of my bathroom.  I'll also pick up shampoo because I'm not too fussy about what I use as long as I have a good leave in conditioner on hand.

Re: dollar general

Best of luck to Cale.  I did livestock judging and so did my daughter.   She was on the Ill. 4-H Team and the University of Illinois Meats and Livestock Judging teams.   So I totally understand the importance of reasons.   My college female friends always got a kick out of my set of Male Causasian Breeding Studs.   To this day when together and we see a couple of good lucking guys they will ask me for an evaluation.  Does he have a set for females yet?    The guys I was on teams with, use to talk about keep, cull classes when at parties.   We could all get pretty punchy after a long day of looking at livestock and giving reasons.    I understand they now do meat goats in this area.   Does he have to do goats too?     I'm assuming he is looking at Oklahoma State to do Animal Science in a few years.

When I was hauling our county 4-H kids around for judging we had:  Mountain Dew,  Cinnamon Rolls and  our team song was:  American Pie.    Hope he had a good day,  with only a few pair switches and no big busts.
