need to find a new vacation area

Just got back from our usual trip to WI. for our birthday treats.  Also wanted to look at barn quilts as we are putting one up for our county group.

We had a nice time-though a really quick trip-but I was so depressed.  We started going to this spot when we started milking and thoroughly enjoyed seeing our partners in the milking business.  Getting a little excited by new barns, etc.  I was so sad I was almost in tears by the time we arrived.  Yes, there are barns that are empty and going downhill, which is depressing, but the farms with those big beautiful Holsteins tore at my heart.

So for awhile I'm going to be watching for a laid back country area with some sightseeing spots or antiques & quilt shops not too far away.  DH still isn't much of a traveler.  (why did I not notice this before I married?)  This last trip was too early with our winter weather this year.  No garden spots were open yet and I was really too worn out to venture to Madison to arboreteum.  Wondered about the Amana colonies or Shipshiwanee or something DH would appreciate.  Any ideas from you midwest gals?

Re: need to find a new vacation area

I love barn quilts but we don't have the right place to put one. We were in MO last week and found several antique malls near Columbia on I-70. There was a sign for a large quilt store but we did not stop. We have not been to Shiphewana for several years and had plans to go with a cousin but she had heart surgery. We drove through Herman MO and it looked like a very interesting place and the countryside was beautiful as was the river town.

What happened to the plan for a trip together?

Re: need to find a new vacation area

French Lick IN is a growing historic refurbished town. It has a casino and golf course etc. But few antique shops.

Re: need to find a new vacation area

Minden, Nebraska is a wonderful spot if you like to look at LOTS of antiques. Don't know of too many antique malls in the area though. But there is always a store somewhere in this state that sells antiques. Almost forgot, the International Quilt Museum is located near the East Campus of UN-Lincoln. Maybe hubby can look at the Larson tractor museum while you look. They aren't too far apart.
