Re: tornado

Suey, I am trying to recall the precise context and source of the conversation...Bill Maher's Real Time last Friday may have been the scene, but it it wasn't his point...probably part of the panel discussion. i am so distracted so much now...sorry!

Re: tornado

Missed by about 150 yards.  Really surprising that only one died in this area.  Electric returned yesterday, still no water nor natural gas.  Stayed throughout to clean up the mess.  Positive it would have been very tough to leave a comfortable hotel room and deal with the destruction.  The better half only hung on by the barest thread.  Showers were later available at the local health club but had to deal with a very restrictive curfew and martial law restrictions.  A body wash with cold bottled water isn't a great treat.  For a couple of days is was eerily quiet until the repair and cleanup crews began running full tilt at night.  Today several residents have returned to the less damaged areas and I can see lights, but no one on this block.  Long Johns will be necessary tonight since it will drop into the single digits and only have one small space heater and only boards over some windows.   Need to thoroughly inspect the wood stove chimney before utilizing that asset.  Houses across the street are either inhabitable or are largely destroyed.  Volunteers completely tore down what remained of the house on our side immediately above us and the owners given a replacement insurance check.  But so many are in worse shape with most if not all personal possessions gone.  Charity institutions have been real supportive; they do something while the government usually talks bravado.  Sometimes the Lord giveth and sometimes he taketh away.

Re: tornado

James, all I can say is that I am so sorry that you and your neighbors are in this situation. You seem to have focued on your possible resources, and putting your place back together. From your perspective, where can we send assistance that would do the most good?

Re: tornado

Generally the damaged area here is solidly middle class or perhaps even approaching affluent.  But no doubt some younger couples extended themselves quite a bit and the insurance payout might leave them in considerable debt.  Not sure about the Pekin area which has a large lower middle class population.  Feel quite sorry for the young couple diagonally across the intersection.  Moved in a couple years ago and extensively remodeled the house.  They did most or all of the work; refreshingly energetic.  The house still stands but is in really poor condition.  Suspect their remodeling efforts were for naught.  I wouldn't be surprised if they wind up on the short-end-of-the-stick.  However they appear to have a large, stable supporting family group and should eventually recover.  Recently have begin doubting the effectiveness of some charities.  Salvation Army is no longer on that list.  They will get my donations.  Undoubtedly praying is seen as useless and more than a little trite to many of the male individuals using this site, but contrary to this negative attitude I believe that supplication for those in distress is a good thing.  Thirty eight degrees in the bedroom this morning, required around 11/2 hours to become motivated.  After a few minutes working outside decided we would rather spend day with the two year old twin grandchildren and play with some new toy harvesting equipment that I bought several weeks ago after their first combine ride.   Appreciate the concern.
