Yields per Acre

by on ‎08-22-2013 01:01 PM

A good corn yield is 250 bushels per acre (per year). That gives 14,000 pounds of grain.

Advanced climate-controlled greenhouses, like Village Farms International, Inc., commercial GATES greenhouse, today are producing more than 850,000 lbs of vegetables per acre per year, 61 times a corn yield.

Supplementary lighting will increase that to one million pounds per acre per year.

Climate-controlled greenhouses are probably the most productive agricultural systems anywhere.

As we look to the future, a combination of produce suppliers is the most likely development, with the middle of the market supplied by large local greenhouses, the most affluent consumers paying a premium for ultra-local rooftop production, and the value-conscious customers continuing to purchase vegetables grown seasonally and shipped in from other regions.

As supply and demand vary, farmers will respond by growing the optimal crop.  It may take a generation or two but change has always happened in agriculture and likely always will.

A major change would involve people having the ability to grow more and more of their own food, but that assumes a stable lifestyle which may not be in the cards.  It may be easier for people to go to the grocery story and complain that they can't get what they want for the money they wish to pay.

Nevertheless, it will be more and more possible to "home grow" and that can have significant affects on projection of supply and demand.  The future will be interesting, dynamic and likely volatile.
