The saying goes that "Every day is Earth Day for farmers and Ranchers." 

Border spraying is a job on the farm that is a little bit like cleaning the toilet at home.  You know it has to be done, and yet it always falls to the end of the list of things to do. 

You know those little gray or black colored slimy creatures, they run about an inch long, they are gross.  You may have them in your flower beds, they may bother your garden a bit.  Well those darn sleezy slugs are causing more and more of a headache for us grass seed growers here in Oregon.

Meet some of Oregon's Young Farmers and Ranchers through a video series put out by Oregon Farm Bureau.  You will hear them speak about why it's important to be involved and what they are up to on their farms all over the state of Oregon.

The Oregon Agribusiness Coucil has continually been looking for ways to bridge the urban and rural gap here in Oregon.  While our borders are close in proximity, our understanding of what the other is doing is a never ending job for us farmers.  They have a few projects, including "Adopt a Farmer" and roadside signs that tell drivers by what is growing in all the fields around them.

This spring has been wild; and it isn't even officially spring yet!  The weather is incredible, and all the crops and dirt are acting like March is nearing the end instead of just getting started.  I had two calls this week that we need to plant both peas and cabbage sooner rather than later (with the subtle hint that sooner is ASAP).  The ground where these crops are going on one field is bare dirt, on another covered in a cover crop of clover.

While the rest of the country seems to be under feet of snow, worrying about where they are going to put it all.  Here in Oregon I don't think it could be more of the opposite.  It's been sunny, warm, with a little rain here and there. 

It's Valentine's Day, which means that I have beautiful roses on my dining room table, I have a delicious dinner planned tonight, and I'm excited to get dressed up for a dinner at home with the four men in my life.  Yes, two dogs, Hoot, Matt and I have big plans to stay in tonight and just relax.

What does it mean to be the minority in agriculture?

I have had this whole blog post in my head for the New Year.  It has been rolling around and being edited for...what I thought was a few days.  Until all the sudden I realized it's not just the middle of January, it's basically the end already.  The New year, is about 21 days past new news.  Which I suppose just goes to show how busy us farmers are, even when there's nothing to harvest.  Even when the sun isn't always shining.  The life of farming does not let us get lazy, not even close.
